Max Clifford, publicist (1943- )

Max Clifford is a Public Relations consultant. One of his earliest assignments, when he was working for the record company, EMI, was to promote a then unknown group from Liverpool - the Beatles!

Growing up in South Wimbledon, London, he left his secondary modern school at the age of 15 without any formal qualifications. He refers to his "Honours degree in street-raking"!

He was sacked from his first job for playing practical jokes on the staff. But then he got a job as a junior reporter on a local paper and learnt the business of communications. He has run his own PR company for about 30 years and has represented world-famous people like Mohammed Ali, Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando.

He handled media relations for Mandy Allwood, the woman who became pregant with eight embryos.
