1. Draw a picture of a lifeboat setting out to sea. | ||
2. Imagine that you have been swept out to sea in an inflatable dinghy. Write about how you feel and about how the local lifeboat came to rescue you | ||
3. Design a poster urging people to contribute to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. | ||
4. Read about how Jesus made the sea calm. Matthew 8, verses 23-27. | ||
5. Read R.M. Ballantyne's story, The Lifeboat, written in 1864. | ||
6. Paul writes of having been shipwrecked three times (2 Corinthians, 11: 25). One of these occasions is recounted in Acts, 27. Read it. | ||
7. Find out how many times the Harwich lifeboat has been called out this year and how it has helped people. You can find this on the internet: CLICK HERE | ||
8. Find out about Henry Blogg (1876-1954), the Cromer lifeboat coxswain. (look him up, for example, in the Dictionary of National Biography) | ||
9. Find out why William Hillary (1771-1847) founded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution | ||
10. Before Britain had a lifeboat service, another way of rescuing people from ships wrecked close to land was used. This was by firing a rocket carrying a line. Find out about the inventor of this rocket, Henry Trengrouse (1772-1854). | ||
11. Look out in the newspapers for reports of lifeboats being called out and make a class book of cuttings. | ||
12. Organise a fund-raising event so that you can send a donation to the RNLI. | ||
13. Join Storm Force, the club for young people who wish to support the RNLI. You can get an application form from Storm Force HQ, RNLI, West Quay Road, Poole, Dorset. BH15 1XF | ||
14. Watch out for street collections for charities in your own area. Which charities are they? Collect the badges or stickers that are given to acknowledge donations. | ||
15. Visit a lifeboat station or lifeboat museum. The RNLI publishes a guide to its stations and museums, showing when there are open days or how to make arrangements for a group visit. | ||
