Celebrating Harvest

Of the major world religions, only Judaism and
Christianity celebrate harvest. But as you can see
here, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism
have other festivals in which food has a significant role and which
we celebrate the good things with which we are provided.
All religions celebrate our sense of being at one with the
natural world.
Today, especially in Western towns and cities,
where we have a wide variety of food
available all the year round, it may be difficult to
appreciate the significance of harvest.
Some Christian churches and chapelsstill mark the
festival but in quite new ways-collecting tinned and packet
foods, fo example, to give to the underpriveleged, rather than
decorating the interior of the building with fruit and vegetables.
