Handels oratorio Messiah was performed in the chapel of Thomas Corams Foundling Hospital in London on 1 May 1750. The composer himself conducted it. The occasion marked the third anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Hospital chapel. The performance raised £728 3s 6d for the Hospitals funds. Already in May 1749 Handels Music for the Royal Fireworks had been performed at the chapel. Messiah was performed there each year until Handels death in 1759. |
