The performance of Handel’s Messiah on 1 May 1750
Handel’s oratorio Messiah was performed in the chapel of Thomas Coram’s Foundling Hospital in London on 1 May 1750. The composer himself conducted it. The occasion marked the third anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Hospital chapel. The performance raised £728 3s 6d for the Hospital’s funds. Already in May 1749 Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks had been performed at the chapel. Messiah was performed there each year until Handel’s death in 1759.
