Centenary of the death of Sir Henry

Tate Sir Henry Tate died on 5 December 1899. He was the founder of the Tate Gallery, in London, which opened on 21 July 1887 and to which he gave his own collection of 65 paintings, a number of which were by Millais. His fortune came from sugar refining and from his patenting of the means of cutting sugar into dice-sized cubes.
